We are using our smartphones increasingly, and the number of smartphones around the world is growing every year. We use them for tasks as simple – or complicated – as doing maths, taking photos, getting directions or bus times, as well as calling our family and friends.
Smartphones can also be goldmines of data for companies and advertisers: they are always with us, reflect our personality, interests, and networks. Many apps will use the things you search for to then target you with advertising, but this can bring up surprising results (take a look here for more discussion of advertising). However, some people have claimed that their phones listen in on their conversations and then target the advertising as a result. Have a look at this article for discussion of the practicality of this, and think about the legal and moral issues.
