1 – Read, Read, Read
Reading is a great way to experience a range of perspectives and to learn about new things. Not only will you feel proud when you see a stack of books piling up, but reading a range of books — fiction and non-fiction, from home and abroad, is fantastic for developing your critical thought and might even give you something to talk about in those dreaded college/university applications. Take a look at 2016’s Books of the Year to get you started.
2 – Do Your Research
Preparing for the next step can seem daunting. Whether that’s researching colleges and universities, picking subjects or even just figuring out what to do this summer, it pays to investigate. Work out your priorities — whether it’s a challenging academic environment, a historic institution, or a world-renowned method of teaching and use these as a basis for making your decisions. Better yet, if you’re thinking of attending a top UK institution get yourself a taster — at OISS all our tutors were educated at Oxford and Cambridge and you get to stay in the same accommodation as actual Oxford students, meaning you get a real sense of what it’s like to study at a top UK institution.
3 – Stay Active
This doesn’t just mean hitting the gym, or going Gluten-free. This means keeping your mind as well as your body active and centred, supporting you through what can be a stressful first few months of the year. Take a look at some of these great tips on how to be a Mindful student and have a go at putting them into practice — your brain will thank you!
4 – Seize Every Opportunity
If 2016 was the year of realising things (thanks, Kylie Jenner) then 2017 is the year of grabbing those things and getting them done. It may seem scary, but if you want to ace your exams, get into a top university or college and start seeing the world, then this is the year to do it. With some forward planning and positive energy 2017 can be the year you set personal and academic goals that you actually achieve (wooo!) and all thanks to our fave member of the Kardashian Klan (soz Kendall…)
5 – Go Global
Despite what it may seem like, there will be no better time to get exploring. Meeting new people from around the world will give you the opportunity to gain insights into world events from lots of different perspectives and, more importantly, you can make international friendships for life. Studying abroad is also great for higher education applications as it shows you are independent and take initiative — key things top institutions are looking for in their students. (If you don’t believe us — take a look at what Harvard University say they’re looking for here)
6 – Have Fun!
If 2016’s shown us anything it’s that you have to live everyday as it comes (YOLO, anyone?). So make 2017 a memorable year for the right reasons. Work hard to achieve your goals but remember that the most important thing is that you’re happy and have the opportunity to experience all the great things life has to offer.
